Latest Dory Coming Along

It's funny how large an 11-foot bottom dory looks after building three back-to-back-to-back Little Sister dories (eight-foot bottom, 11' 3" length overall). But once Jay started planking, this boat just seemed to grow!

You'll see this dory has four planks per side. Other boats may have three. That's not a detail of one model vs. another, but a simple practicality relating to the width of planks available. In this case, the planks were a bit narrower, resulting in the four-plank side.

Looking closely you'll also notice this boat is being built with copper rivets instead of the more traditional galvanized boat nails. Like the modifications to materials, discussed in our last update, this decision has to do with the climate in the area this dory will eventually call home; namely, the southern United States. As you can tell from the sheer numbers of rivets, this is a time-consuming job but one that will make a big difference to the longevity of the boat.
