False soles
While those who race dories like to use the knees (frames) like a brace when hauling back on the oars, some boaters find them a bit of a pain; frankly, something to trip over when moving around the boat. Such folks tend to want a little secondary floor or false sole as we call it. It’s fitted flush with the tops of the knees and is fully removable so you can still bail your dory if she takes on a little water.
This was the request with our latest project, a boat bound for Georgian Bay, Ontario. As you can see, Jay did a find job of custom-fitting the various sections. This client also requested a sturdy stern seat, also removable. It’s a fine spot, especially if you can find someone else to row you around while you sit off.
