Canadians pick their champs

The Canadian International Dory Race Committee held its elimination races over the weekend. This report from chairman Wayne Spindler.

“We had a great day for the Canadian Elimination Dory races August 30. The weather was just about perfect, with the exception of a fairly strong westerly breeze. The turn out of both rowers and spectators was very good. The rowers did not disappoint the spectators with some very interesting races, some of which changed leads several times during the course of the race.

“The only snag came when a scallop dragger unexpectedly left the wharf to go to sea during the women’s race causing some anxious moments. Both teams of rowers agreed that it would not have changed the outcome of the race and decided not to row the course a second time. The team of Nicole and Natalie Jones won that race with a time of 6 minutes, 23 seconds over the team of Shirley Robichaud and Susan Beaven.

“The next race of the day was the Over 40 (Masters), with three teams registered. The tandem of Walter Nickerson and Dan Moody won this race with a time of 5 minutes, 48 seconds edging out the other two teams of Kenny Macdonald and Tim Mair, Russel Atkinson and Fenton Cunningham.

“Next came the Mixed Doubles race. This race was won by Natalie Jones and Tim Mair with a time of 6 minutes, 3 seconds over the teams of Nicole Jones, Trevor Swim and Susan Beaven, Andy Sekulovich.

The Junior men went next with a great turn out of competitors. The four dory line-up consisted of Connor Swim and Holden Nickerson, Josh Snyder and Jared Atkinson, Scott Tanner and Ashton Langille, Jeremy Chetwynd and Titus Penny. Swim and Nickerson won their race with a time of 6 minutes, 24 seconds. This race was not without incident as the team of Snyder and Atkinson broke an oar and had to limp back to the finish line very disappointed.

“The final race of the day, the Senior men or open class, was almost a longer version of the over 40, with two of the three teams that competed in the over 40 also completing in this race. Again Walter Nickerson and Dan Moody showed what they are made of by winning this category as well, over the teams of Kenny Macdonald and Tim Mair, Bill Baker and Hazen Cunningham. Nickerson and Moody’s time for this race was 9 minutes, 56 seconds.

“Rather then row two races during the Internationals on September 13, Nickerson and Moody will represent Canada in the Senior men’s category while Macdonald and Mair, who came in just behind Nickerson and Moody in the over-40 category, will row against the US team in that race.”
