With Christmas just around the corner, winter is in the air and things are winding down for the year at the Dory Shop. The Seine Dory course was as entertaining as you would expect, and despite one or two surprising mishaps, the Seine is very nearly complete with all the special-order extras her new owner requested. The class did the building of the dory, but it takes our Master Builder Jay to create and craft all the optional extras: the decking, side benches, sole, breast hook, steering station, tiller, rudder … and more. The deck was covered with fibreglass for extra protection, and required a whole extra set of knees to keep everything in place where it needs to be. She really is a work of art.
The Seine’s owner will be coming back early in the New Year to officially name her, pick her up and take her to her new home – which sounds like it might be in a southerly direction for a bit of warmth (who can blame him!). The dory is big enough that you could stretch right out and sleep in her if you want and I think that might be the plan.
While the Seine course was a bit of a laugh and quite the experience for all involved, it’s pretty unanimous that we will stick to the traditional Handline Dory for future courses. We plan to offer one such course in May of 2015 – keep an eye on our website or Facebook page for an announcement of when that course will take place. If you’re too busy to keep checking online just drop me a line and let me know you’re interested and I will send you an email as soon as we set the dates.
May your holiday season sparkle with moments of love, laughter and goodwill, and may the year ahead be full of contentment and joy. Have a Merry Christmas from all of us here at the Dory Shop.
