This coming weekend will be a huge one for Lunenburg and for international dory racing.
If you’ve been following our news, you already know all about the beautiful new race dories Jay crafted for the Canadian Dory Racing Association. At this very minute, those dories are readying themselves for the international dory races which will be held in Lunenburg this Saturday, August 23.
It isn’t just a one day event, though – festivities will commence on Friday at 1pm with a number of special events along Lunenburg’s historic waterfront including the official launching of the race dories as well as Canada Post’s Lunenburg UNESCO World Site Series stamp launch (featuring a photograph by Ward Isnor of our historic waterfront and a dory) at the Adams & Knickle Wharf. After the launchings, the Canadian rowers will row the dories down to The Dory Shop where we will haul them up to shore to christen them in style with locally brewed Ironworks Bluenose Rum. The public is encouraged to come along and join in the celebrations – if you are interested, Ironworks will be on site and you will have the opportunity to sample their Bluenose Rum which just last week won the coveted title of World’s Best Dark Rum.
The main event – the races – will take place on Saturday August 23rd from 10am until 12 noon at the Adams & Knickle Wharf. We are anticipating lots of supporters to turn out and cheer for the USA and Canadian competitors and hope to see some of you there in the crowds.
If you do come and take part in the celebrations this weekend and find yourself falling in love with dories (as so many people have done before you) then you might be interested to know that there are only a couple of spots remaining in this September’s dory building course. You should really join us and experience a little bit of history in a truly unique and satisfying way.
